Sisonke Compost was borne out of NPO Bioregional South Africa’s work to advance the education and practice of sustainable living for public benefit.  Bioregional aims to build working models of sustainable local business based on the use of renewable and waste resources.

A small composting project was started in early 2022 at Sisonke Garden, North Beach, Durban, working with a nearby hotel to divert Bokashi treated food waste and garden waste from street trees, from landfill, to make compost on site for the food garden there. The hotel then purchases fresh produce back from the garden weekly, as do other nearby restaurants. This has led to the founding of Sisonke Compost as a reseller of Bokashi Bran to treat food waste and to serve the commercial kitchens market in collecting this stream, as well as collaboration with the garden waste services industry to make localised compost. The vision is a network of localised composting sites around Durban, linked to urban food gardens where practical, to demonstrate both circular and green economy enterprise opportunity. This keeps both food and garden waste in situ to where it is produced to minimise both transport and landfill emissions, and so regenerate local soils for the good of all.

As soil stewards we guard the health of soils and our own. Convert the Dirt works to restore soil life, be it in your crop fields, grow areas or urban garden. We support each other on the journey to growing beneficial, diverse networks in the soil to bring balance and fertility with decreasing dependence on chemical inputs.

Our work centres around harnessing the skillsets of microorganisms from thermophilic decomposition to nutrient cycling within plants roots. All waste types, regardless of quantity and frequency with which it is produced, have an optimal recipe format where it serves not only as a tool for waste management but is also converted into a high-quality soil amendment full of beneficial microbe life which is important for soil, plant and environmental health.

The Africa Zero Waste Hub is a product of an umbrella project funded by the Urban Movement Innovation Fund (UMIF) that focused on mobilising and organising around zero waste in cities. The Hub content is generated from the generous sharing and learning that continues to take place online across different contexts between the Durban University of Technology's Urban Futures Centre (UFC@DUT), groundWork (gW), Asiye eTafuleni (during 2021-2023) – all based in Durban, South Africa, Nipe Fagio (Tanzania), Purpose (Kenya), the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) (Ghana), the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) and UMI. While the South African team of this network, who work on the Warwick Zero Waste project (WZW Project), are responsible for the website development and design, the content and learnings here are generated from all these organisations and partners – it is through learning and sharing as a collective that we can move towards better zero waste practices.
